I’ve always wanted to start something on the internet – a blog, a personal brand, or a project for self-expression.
Unfortunately, I always fail because of one big problem: NICHING DOWN.
As someone who’s been working in the online marketing industry for almost eight years now, I’m well aware that most gurus recommend picking only one thing to be successful.
And believe me, I tried it so many times, but I always didn’t make it.
Now, I know why. It’s because I’m a multipotentialite.
If you’ve read some of my blog posts, you probably already know I had more than seven jobs by the time I turned 27.
Every time I start a personal brand around each career, it won’t take too long before I abandon it because I have a new job I’m preparing to pursue.
It’s always been like this until I met someone who permanently changed my perspective about online business.
His name is Dan Koe.
We’ll talk about him and his philosophy later on, but for now, let me share some good things that happened to me when I finally gave up choosing a niche.
1. I finally got started.
I love writing, but I didn’t pursue it soon enough because I didn’t want to write one single thing for the rest of my life.
In short, I want to write, but I don’t want to niche down.
This is why I learned and explored many things but ended up with nothing to show for it.
When I shifted my focus from writing about one thing to documenting my journey last year, my life dramatically changed 180 degrees.
For the first time, I feel so liberated and unrestricted.
After a few weeks of brainstorming and planning, I finally started this blog, a baby I dreamed of having.
2. I finally have something exciting to look forward to.
Just thinking of writing one single topic week in and week out already bore the hell out of me.
For someone who isn’t a multipotentialite, they can do this without hiccups.
But for me, the monotony and the lack of novelty will just make me want to give up early, and I don’t want it to happen AGAIN.
Instead of writing about one thing, I decided to pick three interests I want to focus on.
One interest that can make money.
One interest that excites me.
One interest that improves my personality.
I’ve learned this concept of 3 domains of mastery from Dan Koe’s 2 Hours Writer course.
With this approach, I’ve made more progress than ever because what I write about brings me fun, meaning, and excitement, which I probably wouldn’t get in picking a niche.
3. I’m able to explore, enjoy and maximize my multipotentiality
In her book “How to Be Everything”, Emilie Wapick shared that the multipotentialites she interviewed who are both happy and financially comfortable have three common elements in their lives.
These are MONEY, MEANING & VARIETY.
When I decided to start a blog without choosing a specific niche, I realized my life became so much better.
While I’m quite far from reaching my big goals, I’m proud to say that I’m living my life the multipotentialite way.
As of writing this, I work as a part-time copywriter in a content marketing agency and as a part-time online business manager for a confidence coach.
I love my two jobs because they both give me money and variety.
Of course, this blog is where I get the most meaning, giving me the perfect trifecta to satisfy my endless curiosity in my professional and personal life.
Write for Yourself, Build for Yourself, Sell to Yourself
A year ago, I came across Dan Koe (the person I mentioned in the intro), and I’ve been consuming his content ever since.
What I like the most about him is his philosophy: to solve your problems and sell the solution.
At this point in my life, I’m focused on solving my own struggle, which is to build a writing-based personal brand as a multipotentialite.
And maybe one day, once I have the system, results and solutions, I can help someone who wants to do the same thing.
But at the beginning of my journey, I want to be selfish and learn for myself, write for myself, build for myself, and eventually sell for myself.
I firmly believe in “you can’t pour from an empty cup.”
So, my focus for now is to set a big goal, educate myself on how to achieve it, experiment with different solutions, and then share my journey, my outcomes, and new, better ways to do it with you.
Is it possible to build a personal brand without a specific niche?
Can you write about your many interests and earn money from them?
I hope you join me in finding out.
